“In 1912, a German archaeologist called Ludwig Borchardt was digging through the remains of Amarna and found a life-sized bust of a long-dead queen. As Borchardt recorded in his diary, “Description is useless, see for yourself.”
She did live up to her name…”
— Ludwig Borchardt
The Beautiful One Has Come is a time-based digital work created through the parametric manipulation of a 3D scan of Nefertiti’s bust. Mathematical abstraction transforms the sculpture from a static archaeological object into a fluid, shifting image, suspended between recognition and dissolution. The work reflects on the instability of beauty, authenticity and representation, while also addressing the histories of ownership and cultural appropriation surrounding the bust. Its digital source carries its own contested history: the scan was produced without permission inside Berlin’s Neues Museum, reopening questions around access, copyright and who has the authority to reproduce cultural artefacts. Through this continuous transformation, Nefertiti’s image becomes both ancient object and digital material endlessly reconstructed, circulated and reimagined.
