MIDDAY MUSE.
Site-specific installation · CGI & architectural collage · London, 2022
Midday Muse transforms a contemporary interior into a fictional architectural space inspired by Italian Metaphysical painting. Fragments of a digitally reconstructed Athena Lemnia merge with the surrounding walls, light and architectural surfaces, blurring the boundaries between classical sculpture, digital imagery and physical space.
About the work.
Drawing on the dreamlike atmospheres and unexpected spatial compositions of early twentieth-century Italian Metaphysical painting, Midday Muse reimagines Athena Lemnia, the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom and craftsmanship, within a contemporary architectural setting.
Through algorithmic 3D reconstruction and CGI, the classical figure is fragmented and reassembled into an ambiguous sculptural presence. Recognisable features, including Athena's iconic helmet, are preserved, while her form is transformed through synthetic textures, digital distortions and shifts in scale.
The installation unfolds as an oversized architectural collage, where classical imagery and contemporary computational processes converge. Rather than presenting the sculpture as an isolated object, Midday Muse allows its fragments to inhabit the surrounding architecture, creating a dialogue between historical representation and the physical experience of space.
The installation was developed through CGI, digital collage and large-format printing. Digitally reconstructed sculptural fragments were rendered in response to the existing lighting conditions and sightlines of the open-plan interior.
The final composition was produced using high-definition inkjet printing and hand-cut vinyl, layered directly onto painted walls, glass and wooden surfaces. By incorporating the direction of natural and architectural light into the CGI rendering, the work creates subtle visual continuities between the digital imagery and its physical surroundings.
